Skill summary (paraphrased from transcript)
- Passive — Platinum Snap: auto-triggers Thunderbolt stacks (no basic attack needed). Standing near enemies (or them charging at you) deals 5% Max HP true damage + applies a freeze. Per-target 12s cooldown on the freeze, but it can hit multiple enemies simultaneously (5 enemies dashing in = all 5 frozen). Enemies see a circle indicator under them when ready to be re-frozen.
- Skill 1 — Immobilize: ~2.5s immobilize. Charge mechanic (Alice-ult-style ring around Marcel that builds + explodes).
- Skill 2 — Sprint + Dash: activate to sprint (faster the closer you are to enemies). Second tap dashes. Combo: turn on S1 first → activate S2 → run through enemies → S1 explodes for AoE immobilize → dash out with S2.
- Ultimate — Time Stop: 3-second AoE freeze. Freezes EVERYTHING in the circle — enemies, teammates, minions, towers, Lord, projectiles in flight. Skills already cast continue ticking once unfrozen; the ult does not cancel anything.
"This is the biggest secret. Use it during turtle or lord. When the objective is low HP, ult and walk up — you basic attack the boss while everything around you is frozen. When the ult ends, you've already secured it."
This is the highest-EV use of his ult in solo rank. Saves countless games even when teamfights are losing.
Why pairing with melee teammates fails
Anything inside the ult ring freezes — including your own front line. Marcel ult only works with ranged DPS partners who can stand outside the ring and shoot in once the freeze ends. Best partners:
- Granger (long-range, burst).
- Clint (range + crit).
- Changge (ult does damage at range).
- AVOID: Lancelot, Yu Zhong, Aldous, Roger — melee teammates get locked in the ring and waste the entire window.
Engage combo (when committing forward)
- S1 active (charge ring around you).
- S2 to sprint through as many enemies as possible — sprint speed-boosts when near enemies.
- Dash away with S2's second tap before S1 explodes (so you're outside the immobilize zone).
- Aim ult to cover the immobilized cluster so they're frozen the moment the immobilize ends.
Build & Emblem
- Spell: Flicker (engage) OR Revitalize (peel-leaning).
- Emblem: Tank — Firmness → Tenacity → Concussive Blast. (Hajun previously used Support but pivoted to Tank for early sustain.)
- Roam item: Encourage (always — Marcel doesn't heal).
- Boots: Speed Boots.
Item path (core)
- Speed Boots + Encourage.
- Thunderbolt — core item. Marcel's passive triggers Thunderbolt automatically without basic-attacking, so Thunderbolt's % damage on proc is essentially free DPS just from standing near enemies.
- Oracle — passive shield + heal pairs with his passive's small heal.
- Dominance Ice — anti-heal + hybrid def.
- Chastise Pauldron — extra heal at <30% HP + AS reduction.
- Immortality → swap to Guardian Helmet post-pop.
HP-to-defense conversion (passive item interaction)
"Marcel will never get more HP. Whatever extra HP you build turns into hybrid defense at 1.5x."
Practical: don't build pure-HP items (Wandering Wizard, Cursed Helmet's HP component is wasted for HP but converts to def). Build items that have direct defense or utility.
Macro — early-game routine
- L1 → max S2 first (mobility — sprint to enemy buff, brush past their jungler so the passive freeze fires + 5% true damage, dash away).
- Always clear mid wave when up. Marcel's ult is the win condition; you can't unlock it without L4.
- Goal: hit L4 ASAP.
- Mid game: peel for damage dealers — just standing near them passively freezes any diver who tries to engage.
- Late game with full Thunderbolt stacks: you can solo-burst a squishy by ult → walk in → S1 + autos.
Counter notes & open questions
- Marcel is not a frontline tank. He plays passive, sprints in to apply pressure, sprints out. Don't try to hold the center of a fight on him.
- Open question (transcript): does the ult cooldown trigger on cast or on ring-end? Hajun didn't confirm — verify on next patch read.
- Mobility heroes (Lancelot, Fanny, Hayabusa, Beatrix) can dash out before S1 explodes if the timing is bad. Pair S1+S2 with Flicker reposition to seal escape directions.
